Together is a Distant Star

A Science Fiction & Fantasy Anthology on Belonging

How far would you go to find where you belong?

A shapeshifting alien changeling raised by humans. The “wicked” child selected as the village sacrifice. People trapped in rigid belief systems, oppressive regimes, well-intentioned families, complicated relationships, and their very own bodies.

Is it better to succumb and survive, or escape by staking everything on a slender hope?

What triumphs in the end, love or vengeance?

And if all that remains is ashes, is it still worth it?

Grapple with these questions by diving into twelve new science fiction and fantasy stories. Together is a Distant Star is a collaborative anthology that encompasses authors hailing from Europe to Australia, South Africa to South America, and celebrates a kaleidoscope of perspectives—female, nonbinary, BIPOC, queer, and more.

Rysere’s Glory

By Delilah Waan

Love wears many guises, my son.

Enjoy them all, but beware love’s favorite form.

Let no one bind you so strongly that you cannot escape their chains.

It is high sun on a clear day in early spring, the Skymother having donned her brightest, bluest cloak, yet the crowd’s buzzing excitement has set the ambient resonance ablaze. All of Tsorek-fa, it seems, has gathered in the harbor to gawk at the newest arrival to the city of sails. Concealed within that seething mass of scarred bodies, her presence well masked by a discreet Obfuscation barrier, Rysere Imos, too, cranes her neck.

‘Breathtaking immensity’ does not begin to describe the gold-and-white Dominion ship sent to fetch her home; its mountainous bulk dwarfs even the three-masted war-sloops docked nearby. The crowd’s fascination blooms as orange flame-like ripples of resonance that dance across their collective auras before running together as a many-tongued wave licking up the ship’s tall, curved sides. There the flames stall and break apart, repelled by the resonance wards etched upon the sleek strakes. Cleverly disguised as the brilliant, interlocking scales of a leviathan, the coiling length of the wards runs from stern to stem and culminates in a snarling figurehead so disconcertingly lifelike that she has to suppress a shudder when meeting the dragon’s cold, jeweled-eye stare.
